The open architectural design competition “Development of the Urban Quarter ‘Tērbatas Dārzs’” has officially concluded!
In the second round of the competition for the design of the architectural form of the building facades, two architectural offices from Latvia emerged as winners. SIA “Mark Arhitekti” won the design for three buildings with a total planned construction volume of 33,250 m². These buildings will be constructed at Krišjāņa Barona iela 75, Krišjāņa Barona iela 75A, and Tērbatas iela 78B. Meanwhile, the proposal by SIA “PBR” for two buildings with a total planned construction volume of 21,360 m², to be built at Krišjāņa Barona iela 75B and Tērbatas iela 78C, was rated as the best.
“We are very pleased with the high-quality work that won the competition for the next development phase of the ‘Tērbatas dārzs’ area, encompassing five buildings. We eagerly await the opportunity to implement these ideas and transform the ‘Tērbatas dārzs’ area into a modern residential quarter, combining sustainable solutions and high-quality architecture with a unique concept of green courtyards and urban allotments,” stated Ülo Adamson, co-founder and CEO of Estera Development.
In the first round of the competition, 26 applications were received from architectural offices in several countries, including Latvia, Estonia, Switzerland, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Poland. The jury selected six applicants deemed most suitable to advance to the second round of the “Tērbatas dārzs” design competition. The competition aimed to obtain architecturally superior and high-quality solutions for the facades of residential and mixed-use buildings in the new “Tērbatas dārzs” city quarter. One of the criteria was that the five new buildings in “Tērbatas dārzs” had to fit into the urban environment and landscape of Riga’s historical center, respecting the scale of surrounding buildings, compositional principles, and the urban structure of the specific location.
“Tērbatas dārzs” is a new, modern city quarter being developed by Estera Development between Tērbatas Street and Krišjāņa Barona Street, on the site of the former Sports Palace hockey hall. With planned investments exceeding €120 million, the area will feature 800 apartments and spacious commercial spaces, creating an attractive environment for residents and businesses. Apartment reservations for the first building, construction of which is planned for 2025, have already begun.
